Oct 24, 2025

Ready to use NFC tags? Our step-by-step guide shows you exactly how to read and write NFC tags with any smartphone. Unlock automation for your home, business, and life!

So, you've got some NFC tags, but you're not sure how to program them? You're in the right place. Using these powerful little chips is simpler than you think. This guide will walk you through the process on both Android and Apple iPhone.

What You'll Need:

  1. Blank NFC tags (like NTAG213/NTAG215/NTAG216).

  2. An Android smartphone or an iPhone (iPhone XS/newer or iOS 14+ recommended).

  3. An NFC writing app. We recommend NFC Tools, or TagWriter by NXP (free for basic functions) for its user-friendly interface.

Step 1: Check Your Phone's NFC Settings

  • Android: NFC is usually on by default. Swipe down for Quick Settings and look for the "NFC" or "NFC and contactless payments" toggle. Ensure it's enabled.

  • iPhone: iPhones automatically read NFC tags by default (no settings needed). For writing, you must use a third-party app like NFC Tools.

Step 2: How to READ an NFC Tag

This is the easy part!

  1. Unlock your phone.

  2. Simply hold the back of your phone close to the NFC tag.

  3. Your phone will vibrate or beep, and the programmed action will occur (e.g., a website opens, a Wi-Fi connects).

Step 3: How to WRITE an NFC Tag

This is where the magic happens. We'll use the NFC Tools app.

For Android & iPhone:

  1. Download and open the NFC Tools app.

  2. Go to the "Write" tab.

  3. Tap "Add a Record". Here you can choose what to program:

    • URL: To open a website.

    • Text: To display a note.

    • Wi-Fi: To share your network credentials.

    • App: To launch a specific application.

  4. Enter the required information (e.g., paste your website link).

  5. Tap "OK" and then "Write".

  6. Now, hold the top of your phone close to the blank NFC tag.

  7. Wait for the successful confirmation message. You're done!
